Postdoctoral Scholar, Northwestern University, Chicago
NIDA-funded Postdoctoral Scholar
Department of Medical Social Sciences, Northwestern University, Chicago
Project Description: We are recruiting for a 1-2 year postdoctoral research position beginning in Summer, 2012 (start date flexible). The position is supported by the NIDA-funded “Gene Environment Neighborhood Interaction” (GENI) Study, which is directed by Brian Mustanski, PhD. The core of this project is a natural experiment in which a sample of youth from an on-going longitudinal study have relocated out of an impoverished public housing community to more advantaged neighborhoods. The primary aim of GENI is to test a bioecological model of HIV risk that will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the relative contributions and patterns of interactions between genes and neighborhoods. Specifically, this study will identify environmental factors that protect against risk predisposing genes and these data can inform interventions designed around these interactions.
This position is intended for individuals pursuing a research career. Primary responsibilities will be data analysis and manuscript preparation, including both first-authored and collaborative papers. The position will provide excellent experience and exposure to behavioral genetics, neighborhood research, and advanced methods of data analysis. Dr. Mustanski will serve as primary mentor with ample opportunities for interaction and collaboration with statisticians and behavioral geneticists who are on the investigative team.
The Scholar will be based in the Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS), Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago. MSS provides a unique home for applied researchers who integrate biomedical and social science approaches to improvement of health. Its defining features are an emphasis on interdisciplinary research and a strongly collaborative orientation. MSS provides rich resources for conducting research, including a broad scientific portfolio with multiple, well-characterized cohorts across the lifespan, psychometric/biostatistical and health informatics cores, expertise in multi-level assessment methods and collaborative relationships across Northwestern’s biomedical and social sciences campuses.
Eligibility: Completion of the doctorate prior to the start of the position is required. Candidates should have an interest in adolescent health risk taking behaviors, excellent quantitative skills, and a proven publication record. Candidates with research experience focused on genetic contributions to behavioral and mental health outcomes will be preferred.
Stipend and benefits: Compensation for this Postdoctoral Scholar position takes into account NIH salary guidelines. The appointment will come with the commensurate benefits offered for this position at Northwestern.
To apply: Email application materials (including a vita, two letters of recommendation, and cover letter outlining research experience and interests relevant to the position) to Dr. Mustanski c/o Robin Morrissey (r-morrissey@northwestern.edu). Applicants will be considered until the position is filled. Northwestern is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
