Post-doc, University of California San Diego (US)

We are seeking two Postdoctoral Fellows with the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging (VETSA) at the University of California San Diego Department of Psychiatry. The UC San Diego Department of Psychiatry is one of the top Psychiatry departments in the country. VETSA comprises a set of NIA-funded longitudinal studies focused on behavior genetics of cognitive and brain aging. The position is for an initial 2-year postdoc.

VETSA has been funded continuously since 2003, completed 3 waves of data collection, with a planned 4th wave in 2020. It is a large, multi-disciplinary twin study in which subjects undergo extensive neuropsychological, psychosocial, health/medical, and multi-modal neuroimaging (MRI) assessments. The study includes GWAS data, AD biomarkers, neuroendocrine assessments, and air-pollution exposure measures. VETSA has a strong emphasis on early identification of risk for mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. With over 1600 partiicpants, life course data reaching back five decades, and 10-12 hours of assessments at each wave, VETSA constitutes a rich dataset that can address a wide variety of aging-related research questions.

Preference will be given to applicants with experience and desire to focus in at least one of the following: cognitive aging; Mild Cognitive Impairment/Alzheimer’s disease; neuroimaging; and/or genetics of aging. The candidate will have opportunities to participate in all aspects of analysis and interpretation of data including traditional twin analyses as well as GWAS, polygenic risk scores, as well as causal-modeling and gene-biomarker pathway analyses and in writing and preparation of manuscripts, presentations for scientific meetings, and grant writing. The postdoc also includes opportunities to participate in international twin/genetics consortia, including CHARGE, ENIGMA, IGEMS, and PGC. The candidate will be encouraged and mentored to develop his/her own independent research program. The candidate will work with the large multidisciplinary multi-site team of over a dozen investigators at UCSD (PI, Dr. William Kremen; co-PI, DR. Carol E. Franz) and with VETSA faculty at other institutions including Boston University (mPI Dr. Michael Lyons), Virginia Commonwealth University (site PI, Dr. Michael Neale), University of California Riverside (site PI, Dr. Chandra Reynolds), and St. Louis University (site PI, Dr. Hong Xian).

The position is for an initial 2 year post-doctoral fellowship starting in 2020. Salary is based on NIH guidelines commensurate with experience, and includes excellent benefits provided by UCSD.
